Healthcare PRO SELF-CARE
for Sustainability...

These reflections are for my fellow spiritual care & palliative clinical pros because community matters ...& it is important in my work to remember that I am not alone – even when I am the only one breathing in the room.

Wheelchair...and a sign: Veteran and Homeless

I did say in my last celebratory Memorial Day post to thank a crusty veteran...

"Thank you for all that you did...(and do)."

It was half gratitude, that made me park the car with blinkers on
...walk over, and hand him a bill. The other half was proving to myself that I  blog for my own clarity—not yours (...MY sign says 'no preaching here'... only communal gardening).

The old guy said: "Aw, thanks."  I shook his hand.
         Cont'd ...

There was something about the robustness of his presence that made me doubt he was a veteran...or even if the wheelchair belonged to him.  Perhaps, my gratitude was misplaced...Even so, it was still... not without benefit to me.

Gratitude, Wellbutrin and Prozac
I just learned that gratitude boosts the neurotransmitter dopamine, like Wellbutrin does, and serotonin, like Prozac does. From the book, The Upward Spiral by Alex Korb, a UCLA neuroscientist says you don't even need to FIND anything to be grateful for, just searching for something to be grateful for works on a biological level—on any really bad day where you cannot find anything for which to be grateful. The happy chemicals happen just remembering to look for the grateful...even if you don't  find it.

I  love it when science (and our stories) meet Spirit—especially on the streets of San Francisco...and Oakland.

Gratitude is a superpower. It is alchemy. Gratitude turns  what I have into enough.

Try it and report back. Plant a seed of gratitude. What does it grow?
