San Francisco Death Cafe @ Hayes Valley
(formerly Fillmore Death Cafe...we moved)
...Coffee, Cake and Conversation
Normally, we don't talk about 'it' in polite conversation. Not so, in a death cafe.
We welcome the conversation about death that in other venues, we avoid. But how can we reasonably? This is the deepest fact of our existence: that it will end. In the way we live our lives, it seems as if our own deaths are so improbable that we think ourselves as immortals. Talking makes it less fearful and more normal, which in turn could make life more precious.
Death Cafes began from an idea in Switzerland and have grown to be a world wide movement via the work of an Englishman, Jon Underwood. It is about just talking in a safe space…because we don’t have all the time in the world. How do we use it well, age well and end well if we don’t talk about it?
Why? ...because an animal designed to know about and accept its own death can be counted upon to be equipped to deal with pretty much any kind of disappointment...(i.e. resiliency which doesn't just make a good end, but a good life, too).
