A Poem on How to Get Up in the Morning & Other Hospice Lessons

A Change in Darkness - a poem from the edge

I am stuck in the question.
It is dark and I am uncertain
if the light will come round again…for another day.
I wait.

Defense no longer protects me
I sit jailed on the edge of fear.
Unwilling to move forward, unable to go back.
I wait.

The morning Earth smells holy,
Holding my rememberings,
of family, ancestors…perfect moments between birth, and death.
I wait.

The dark discloses stars as tiara,
birdsong fills my deafness,
The light begins to remember itself in my chest.
I wait with anticipation…

Blind and seeing what doesn’t move,
Darkness has freed me to know

the whereabouts of eternal breath…

I wait here.

The bluebird arrived home today

via broken feathers, to what cannot break.

By noticing what did not fail, I am firefly.

I wait

I glow.

fluorescing.
